With this Editorial, we are pleased and proud to bring you the inaugural issue of Vita (https://www.vita-journal.com).
For decades, the world’s most influential journals in life and biomedical sciences have largely originated in the West, serving as the primary repositories for the most impactful research from around the globe — including China’s most outstanding scientific contributions. We deeply appreciate the indispensable roles that these journals have played in fostering scientific exchange and expanding the frontiers of knowledge. At the same time, we view diversity of perspectives as a natural driver of progress — for research and for academic publishing alike. As a pivotal member of the global scientific community, China shares the responsibility to actively participate in shaping the landscape of scientific exploration and in defining what constitutes scientific excellence. We also believe that accompanying the rapid growth of research output by China, comes the opportunity to provide public goods that would benefit the global scientific community. It is with this spirit of collaboration and contribution that we introduce Vita.
Vita is published by Higher Education Press and built with the collective support of all member institutions of the Alliance of Open Life Science (openlifesci-alliance.org). Officially established on August 12, 2025 in Hong Kong, China, the Alliance is an international, open, nonprofit academic community. With the determination to benefit the global scientific community, Vita upholds a rigorous scientific standard, and adopts a fully open-access model with no article processing charges. Vita’s core mission is to promote the worldwide dissemination of scientific work that is of the highest quality, which aligns perfectly with the Alliance’s principle: “Science knows no borders”.
Vita launches at a time when innovation in life and biomedical sciences is advancing at an unprecedented pace, driven in part by the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and its pervasive integration across disciplinary boundaries. Amid all these changes, it is critical that the journal remains open-minded, warmly embracing the full spectrum of emerging research directions and groundbreaking technologies. Whatever transformations lie ahead, Vita will remain dedicated to its central role: to provide a high-visibility forum for rigorous scholarship, and to foster genuine dialogue between specialists and the global public. Looking into the future, Vita must also take the necessary steps to evolve alongside humanity’s unfolding understanding of the nature of life.
The essence of life science lies in exploring how life works to better improve human well-being. At Vita, we fully adhere to this very essence. We value ultimate excellence in research and innovation, not the pursuit of hot topics. Vita publishes research that either delivers crucial conceptual advances toward understanding intriguing and fundamental biological questions, or presents disruptive technological breakthroughs across all areas of life and biomedical sciences. The journal holds a broad scope that includes but is not limited to biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, neuroscience, immunology, microbiology, plant science, clinical research, genetics and multi-omics, biosynthesis, biotechnology, and AI biology.
As the founding Editorial team of Vita, our dream extends beyond the pages of this journal. By adopting the principle of “returning to the essence of science”, we seek to strengthen the foundation of a healthy, sustainable research culture — not only in China, but also pertinent to the global research ecosystem. Through rigorous and constructive peer review, stringent ethical oversight, and maximally equitable access, we strive to support scientists worldwide in their pursuit of discovery and excellence, and to play a transformative role in advancing science for the benefit of all.
As we present this inaugural issue of Vita, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our authors, reviewers, and the Scientific Advisory Board members. Your trust and support have been the bedrock of Vita’s launch and growth. We also thank the global community of scientists who have engaged with us over the incipient stage of this brand-new journal.
In Latin, the meaning of Vita matches the scope of our journal: life. Like the work we publish, this name has relevance that extends across borders. In English, Vita evokes both “vitality” and “vital” — representing both the energetic spirit of scientific exploration and the essential knowledge worth disseminating. For Chinese readers, Vita echoes wěi dà (伟大: greatness) and wèi tā (为他: service to others). Both meanings will define our editorial practice in pursuing rigorous and exciting science and serving the global community in need.
Welcome to Vita. Welcome to this exciting journey.
